Iulia Rugină was born in Bucharest in 1982. She studied film and television directing at UNATC in Bucharest between 2002 and 2006. In 2011 she received her master degree in film directing from the same university. Up to now, Iulia has directed 8 short films and 3 medium length films, having co-written all of them. Her student films have been screened at international film festivals in Cannes, Oberhausen, Sarajevo, Munich, Brussels and Seoul. In September 2013, her first feature film, the low budget Love Building (2013), set a record for a Romanian independent production, with 10,206 admissions and box office of 46,000 EUR on its opening weekend, more than double the film's 20,000 EUR budget. The film came in second at the 2013 Romanian box office. Dyingfrom a wound of love (2014) won the Romanian Days Award for Best Short Film at the Transilvania IFF.
