Ruben Östlund is the 2023 Cannes Film Festival Jury President

50 years after his compatriot Ingrid Bergman, the Swedish director Ruben Östlund, twice Palme d`or wiiner, will preside over the Jury at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from 16 to 27 May 2023. 

“I am happy, proud, and humbled to be trusted with the honor of jury president for this year’s Competition at the Festival de Cannes. Nowhere in the film world is the anticipation as strong as when the curtain rises on the films in Competition at the festival,” said Östlund in a statement.

Five of his six features have had world premiered in Cannes, starting with Involuntary, which debuted in Un Certain Regard in 2008. The next film Play was screened at Directors’ Fortnight in 2011. The dark comedy Force Majeure premiered in Un Certain Regard and won the jury prize. With his next feature, The Square, Östlund won the Palme d’Or in 2017, repeting the success in 2022 with Triangle of Sadness. 

“By inviting Ruben Östlund to preside over the Jury, the Festival de Cannes wishes to pay a tribute to films that are uncompromising and forthright and which constantly demand that viewers challenge themselves and that art continue to invent itself”, said the festival.

The festival’s Official Selection will be announced around mid-April.
