Romanian Mammalia Selected for 2023 Berlinale’s Forum

The feature film Mammalia by Sebastian Mihăilescu is among the first titles announced in the Forum section at the 73rd edition of Berlinale. The Romanian/Polish/German/Swiss/British film will have its world premiere at the festival held 16 – 26 February 2023.

The film follows Camil, a 39-year-old man who embarks on a dreamlike journey where the mundane and the fantastic intertwine. With the loss of control over his job, social status and love relationship, he ventures on a quest that makes him question his identity and masculinity. Following his partner, he ends up in a bizarre community with disturbing rituals, where he eventually experiences a tragicomic reversal of roles.

Mihăilescu wrote the script together with Andrei Epure. The cast includes István Téglás, Mălina Manovici, Denisa Nicolae, Steliana Bălăcianu, Rolando Matsangos, Mirela Crețan, Andreea Gheorghe, Mircea Bujoreanu, Marian Pîrvu, Dan Zarug Mihai, and Elena Chingălată.

The film is produced by Romania’s MicroFILM, Poland’s Extreme Emotions and Germany’s Pandora Film in coproduction with Bord Cadre films (Switzerland), Sovereign Films (UK) and HiFilm Productions (Romania), and in association with Visual Walkabout (Romania), nomada.solo (Romania), Aeroplan Studios (Poland), XANF (Poland), Les Films d’Antoine (France) and Wunderlust.

Diana Păroiu and Ada Solomon are the producers, Ewa Puszczyńska and Nina Frese are the coproducers, Dan Wechsler, Andreas Roald and Jamal Zeinal-Zade are the executive producers, and Antoine Simkine is the associate producer. Lights On are the sales agent.
