Kız Kardeşler (A Tale of Three Sisters) by Emin Alper (Beyond the Hill, Frenzy) has been selected for the upcoming Berlinale Competition. It will be the 10th movie from Turkey to have participated in the festival`s Competition section.

A Tale of Three Sisters is the third feature by Turkish auteur Alper, who won Venice’s Jury Special Prize in 2015 with his politically charged drama Frenzy, set in a dystopian Istanbul.

His new film unfolds in central Anatolia, where three sisters who had been assigned as foster children to affluent families are made to return to their father’s house in his poor village. “Deprived of their dreams of a better life, they try to hold on to each other,” promotional materials say.

A Tale of Three Sisters is a co-production between Liman Film (Turkey), NuLook Production (Turkey), Komplizen Film (Germany), Circe Films (Netherlands) and Horsefly Productions (Greece).

Another title in the competition section is the German/Serbian coproduction I Was at Home, but by German director Angela Schanelec.

After a 13-year-old student disappears without a trace for seven days and reappears under mysterious circumstances, his mother and teachers are confronted with existential questions as the boy‘s behaviour is beyond all their previous understanding.

This drama, which also talks about the conflict between generations, is produced by Angela Schanelec through Nachmittagfilm, in coproduction with Serbia’s Dart Film & Video and Germany’s ZDF/3sat. The project was supported by Film Center Serbia with approximately 42,000 EUR in 2018.

Serbian Ivan Markovic is the DoP. The main characters are played by Maren Eggert, Franz Rogowski, Lilith Stangenberg, Jakob Lassalle and Clara Möller.
