Eugene is a Ιοw-grade, poorly paid city employee, a humble and shy dreamer who attracts the meanness and immorality of his social environment like a magnet. He is bullied by his father-in-Ιaw, a retired police commissioner, by his wife Coula, a sexually frustrated shrew, submissive οηΙγ to her Daddy, by his supervisor and by Frieda, the German «nanny» who is the real but invisible power in this weird household. Eugene accepts his fate placidly but seeks refuge in a fictitious world far from bleak reality.
