Bulgaria, 1980. Clouds are gathering over Alex’s idyllic childhood in a small town in the country. The authorities want his father to spy on Alex’s grandfather, Bai Dan, the local wizard at backgammon. The family decides to emigrate to the West. 25 years later Alex is in a German hospital with amnesia after a severe car crash, in which his parents were killed. Bai Dan goes off to Germany, where he teaches his grandson backgammon. The ancient game restores Alex back to life. Bai Dan gets Alex out of the hospital and they hit the road,
